I did little to change the composition from the reference photo I took. I did turn this painting into a sunny day to lighten up the mood.
Check your values. Are you using 3 values for your objects? i.e. rowboat, foreground, trees and foliage. Where are your hard and soft edges? Are there 3 values in your shadow areas?
